Do you ever get sore knees when you bend down?
It could be squatting down to get to the lower shelf, picking something off the ground or even when you are exercising. That pressure that you feel in your knee as you bend is a common but serious problem. Rather than believing that you just have a ‘bad knee’ this blog will help you identify why squatting can induce knee pain and explain just exactly how to fix it!

Knee pain with squatting can be narrowed down to three problems:

  • Tight or overactive muscles increase pressure into the front of the knee which worsens when squatting down. Clinically, most cases of knee pain can improve right away by releasing out the quadricep muscles to reduce the tension on the knee joint. Ongoing stretches over a foam roller is required to maintain the benefits.
  • Muscular imbalance can lead to pressure building up in the wrong areas of the knee. The most common problem is weakness in the gluteus medius or quadricep muscle, particularly the vastus medialis oblique (VMO). This causes the knee to collapse inwards and increase the pressure in the front of the knee and long term can wear out the knee joint. To correct this imbalance, strengthening the weak muscles is required.
  • Having the right squatting technique is important not only with exercise but with everyday life to ensure that we can maintain our mobility and strength without injury.
